GLAZING UPGRADES

WHY IT’S TIME TO SWITCH TO ENERGY EFFICIENT WINDOWS

There’s currently a climate emergency. To have any meaningful impact, we must change our attitude towards energy consumption – and conserving the energy expended to heat our homes through energy efficient windows is a great place to start.

If you live in a period property where the windows are cold and suffer from condensation, you’ll want to be warm and dry as well as reduce your heating bill and carbon footprint. The good news is that you’ve a huge opportunity to improve the efficiency and comfort of your home by upgrading the glazing of your windows. But, how do you do this and what other benefits will this bring to your home?

Andrew Jaynes is a Kent-based timber window specialist, and in this guide we’ll take you through why you should switch to energy efficient windows, and what your options are for these. To find out more about how we can help your home, get in touch with the team today.

WHY CHOOSE A GLAZING UPGRADE INSTEAD OF A COMPLETE WINDOW REPLACEMENT?

If you are looking at upgrading windows, you can either replace the entire window frame completely or you may be able to keep the existing window and just upgrade the glass.

If your existing window frames are unsuitable, then complete replacement windows may be the most suitable option.

Although a upvc window replacement will keep you warm and reduce your bills, they can harm the appearance of your period property. As well as this, the embodied carbon and toxic chemicals used in to manufacture upvc windows, coupled with end-of-life disposal problems, makes them a harmful choice for the environment.

Where you have suitable existing traditional timber windows, upgrading the glazing can protect the historic authenticity of the existing timber windows, and provide the most eco-friendly choice.

But which energy efficient window glazing should you choose?

At Andrew Jaynes, we use high-performance Fineo glazing which can usually be fitted in place of your existing single-glazed windows. Once fitted, the original window frames are repaired, and weather strips can be incorporated that significantly improve draughtiness

WHY IS FINEO GLAZING THE MOST ENERGY EFFICIENT FOR WINDOWS?

New to the market, Fineo vacuum glazing has been specifically designed for window pane replacement to existing traditional timber windows. Here are just a few of the reasons why you should consider it:

Thermal efficiency

Fineo glazing has the same thermal efficiency as a 44mm thick triple glazing (Ug 0.7) but the thickness of the glazing is just 6.8mm – far thinner than typical slimline double glazing, which is around 12mm thick (Ug 1.9).

Vacuum cavivites

Fineo uses vacuum cavities, as opposed to standard gas filled cavities, which provide far more efficient insulation than any type of gas infill. Although vacuum glazing technology is not new, Fineo is unique in having eliminated the conspicuous round cover caps that are a feature of other vacuum glazing products.

Longer lasting

Other ‘slimline’ sealed units are known to fail prematurely at the edge seals that bond the two panes of glass together. Once the edge seal is breached, the unit mists up and performance is lost.

Fineo differs considerably from this type of unit. By using a vacuum instead of gas infill to achieve insulation, the cavity needs only be 0.5mm thick which eliminates the need for an edge spacer.

It has a 15-year guaranteed

For better long-term value and peace of mind, Fineo glazing comes with a 15-year guarantee – although manufacturers suggest that Fineo windows will last for decades.

BUT IF YOU DO HAVE TO OPT FOR REPLACEMENT DOUBLE-GLAZED WINDOWS, CHOOSE TIMBER WINDOW FRAMES

Not only will high-performance timber windows from Andrew Jaynes look perfect in a period property, they’ll give you outstanding heat saving benefits and can have twice the life expectancy upvc. As well as this, timber is undisputedly the only credible low carbon choice for replacement double glazed windows for the long term.

At a glance: what are the benefits of a glazing upgrade to existing windows?

  • In conservation terms, it is the most authentic.
  • If listed building consent has been refused for new windows, a glazing upgrade is more likely to be approved since the fabric of the windows is not altered.
  • The most environmentally sound option due reduction of materials used.
  • Lower cost than whole replacement windows.
  • Lower heating bills.
  • Improved warmth and comfort.
  • Eliminates condensation.
  • Improves sound insulation.
  • Less disruption than replacement windows.
  • Much better longevity compared to slimline double glazing.
